Okay, I know I don’t have to make this, but I’m bored. This is something for those who are anime beginners. This is basically a refrence of words that describe things in anime. A dictionary(hence why it’s called Anime Dictionary). I’m describing these words in my own words(and parts of some that I found online from mangafox and onemanga’s explanation as well as Wikipedia). I’m very bad at describing stuff(especially in my own words), but I will try my best at this(I’ve always wanted to explain what words meant, but I always left that up to my friend who’s a walking encyclopedia. My friend doesn’t know what these words mean. Power to me. Muahahaha! Sorry).
Anime- This is something all people who look at this blog should know. Anime is basically a Japanese cartoon with better drawings(that’s my brief description). The term anime comes from the English word animation. They write that out as アニメーション(anime-shon). The shortened way is アニメ(anime). How to tell the difference between anime and manga is by thinking, “Anime, animation”. Notice how they sound the same. Animation is moving, which represents the images on the T.V. They’re animated. So long explanation short, anime is the stuff you see on T.V. and manga is the book version.
Brother-Complex- Where a girl is in love with her brother(like Utau and Yuuki).
Dandere- It’s short for だんまりデレデレ(danmari deredere). “Danmari” means “to be quiet” or “to shut one’s mouth all the time”. I’m pretty sure everyone else knows what “dere” means. If you still don’t know what I’m talking about, think about Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or Tabitha from Zero no Tsukaima.
Doujinshi- This is like a joke manga. Doujinshi authors basically make fun of a manga by using the same story plot and kinda make fun of it. Most of the doujinshis out there contain hentai, yoaii, or yuri. There are kinda very few out there that don’t have any of those. Lucky Star is not a doujinshi. Aya Shouoto, the author of Barajou no Kiss, makes a bunch of Code Geass yaoii doujinshi.
Ecchi- This is a category of manga. Ecchi is not exactly hentai, but it’s really perverted. Examples are animes Rosario Vampire, Love Hina, Mahou Negima Sensei, To-Love-Ru, DearS, Love Hina.
Harem- This is when a bunch of girls like one guy(or surround one guy). Examples are animes Rosario Vampire, Hayate Combat Butler, Mahou Negima Sensei, Love Hina.
Hentai- This is porn. If you don’t know what porn is, look it up. Simple enough to understand.
Hikikomori- A term used for a person who separates themselves from the rest of society(kinda). Someone who stays in their room all day and refuses to talk to anybody. A person who would never get a girlfriend/boyfriend because they won’t come out of their freaking room(JK). I am kinda a hikikomori without the refusing to talk to the outside world part. I rarely go out. One example from an anime is Jun from Rozen Maiden.
Josei- A category of anime/manga for “older” women. One example is The Midnight Secretary.
Lolicon- It’s where the mangaka displays little girls in a perverted way. Loli-fetish is kinda pedofile between a older guy and a little girl(Iktuo has a loli-fetish. Haha. JK). Opposite of shotacon.
Mahou Shoujo- Mahou Shoujo is Japanese for magical girl. It’s where the main character is a girl and they’re involved with some magic crap. Normally the animes have a lot of fillers. Examples are Shugo Chara!, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, Tokyo Mew Mew, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon.
Manga- This is also something that all of you people should know. Manga is like a Japanese comic book with better plots and art. It’s read backward(which is why they have those annoying manga reading instructions in all of the mangas that you will buy in America for those who are new to mangas). The differnce between manga and anime is that manga is the book version. I don’t want to repeat the anime, animation thing again.
Mangaka- The person who draws the manga.
Meccha- Anime that has a bunch of fighting huge, Transformer-like robots. Examples are Gundam Wing(and all the other ones too), Code Geass.
Moe- A Japanese slang term for a strong interest for anime characters(got this definition from Wiki). Go to ěk-sěn’trǐk to vote for your favorite girl in SoMT(Shoujo-only Moe Tournament).
Omake- A special at the end of the book.
Reverse Harem- This is when a bunch of guys like one girl(or surround one girl). Examples are Barajou no Kiss(best reverse harem ever), Heart no Kuni no Alice.
Scanalating- This is the process of what scanalators do in order to get the newset chapter of manga out in our language. This includes translating, cleaning, type-setting, and editing.
Scanalators- These are the cool people who slave over getting the next manga chapter out in our language. Some scanalating groups are Futari wa Pretty Anon, Turtle Paradise, Nagareboshi, Starry Heaven, Windfall, Eternal Sorrow, and Kokoro no Oasis. There are more out there.
Seinen- This is manga/anime for “older” men. Rozen Maiden is classified as seinen, but no one knows why.
Shotacon- It’s where the mangaka displays little boys in a perverted way. One example is The Devil Within.
Shoujo- If you’re at my blog and don’t know what shoujo is, then GTFO. You have no right to be here! I’m ashamed at you for not knowing what shoujo manga/anime is. Anyway, shoujo manga(I usually read shoujo manga) is where there’s a girl protagonist. There’s normally romance and the guys are normally really hot(like Ikuto, Zero, Kaname, Nanagi, Kaede, you get the idea). Shoujo mangas are targeted towards girls, but if you’re a guy you can like shoujo mangas too(though you’ll be called gay for the rest of your life). I will not list examples because there are too many that I know of.
Shoujo-Ai- This is literally translated as girl love. It’s a milder form of yuri.
Shounen- Usually there is a boy protagonist in shounen manga and there is lots of action(since guys like action). These are targeted towards guys mostly, but girls can read them too(and they won’t be labled as gay).
Shounen-Ai- This is literally translated as boy love. It’s a milder form of yaoii. A really popular shounen-ai series is Loveless.
Sister-Complex- Where a guy is in love with his sister(like Kaname).
Tsundere- A Japanese slang term to describe a person with a hot and cold attitude. Cold on the outside, but sweet on the inside. People with tsundere attitudes are Utau from Shugo Chara!, Louise from Zero no Tsukaima.
Yandere- It’s like tsundere except it’s sweet on the outside and cold on the inside.
Yaoii- It’s where there are two guys, and they like eachother. They probably have sex with eachother(I don’t read yaoii). Most girls are crazy over this stuff(I’m sickened by it). Opposite of yuri.
Yuri- It’s where there are two girls, and they like eachother. They probably have sex with eachoher(I don’t read yuri, so I wouldn’t know). Most guys are crazy for this stuff. Opposite of yaoii.
